Considering that the artist focuses on the stones in the water as the pursuit of a perfect relationship with the Absolute (artist’s note). The artist draws not just a landscape but a thought through a scenery. We wander between an immutable being and a changing one. I know that there exists the eternal value. Yet, that value often seems to be diminished by its hopeless loss to the fight of selfishness and desire. The screen in the back seems to embrace all these situations by sticking to the white margin. The white background symbolizes the temperament of a bright and clean divine being. One day, the artist was captured by serene water holding the splendid and beautiful sunlight. Walking into the contemplation on existence, the writer gained somewhat important insight from the water; that there is always a divine being silently exists aside us; that the transcendental being is not as hasty or as hasty as we are ... It only awaits and hopes to let human beings realize Providence while embracing them with its patience and tolerance. In the paintings of Kim Cheol Seong, the wide margins – surrounding large and small stones – derive from the reflection on the invisible hand that protects us with grace and Providence.
Peacefulness stays in his painting. There is no such agitation or ripple to be found in his painting; maybe the subtle sound of a dragonfly’s flapping its wings or the sound of a twig might be heard. There is no contention, controversy, conflict or desire in his work. Mackerels, silver leaves, lotus flowers, and remote islands in the landscape tell how harmonious the world is. We can glimpse the footsteps of Augustus's country of blissful blessings, as told in his work, God's City of God.
